With the 18-inch Dobsonian telescope, we observed our favourite winter objects (M42, Tau Canis Major Cluster, M46, etc). But the highlight of the evening was the Jovian system. We began our night with Io (fastest moving and volcanoic satellite of Jupiter) entering the disk, shortly followed by Europa (which may have alien life in its vast underground ocean) entering the back side of Jupiter while the shadow of Io joined the race. A few hours later, we saw Io coming out of Jupiter like 'pimple coming out of the face' and the Great Red Spot (the longest lasting storm in the solar system) revealing itself on the other side. While Jupiter continued to deliver one fantastic sight after another, a big red object rose from the sea. It was, of course, our moon. The three dimensional view of craters turned out to be some of the most satisfying views of the night. What an end to an exhilarating night of observation.
