Stargazing for S6 Astronomy Elective Students (30-1-2013)

Having learnt all the astronomical theories in the lessons, it was time to see those things for real. In this extraordinarily clear night, we began with Jupiter and its Galilean satellites at the zenith. With less atmosphere to travel through, the image was very crisp with incredible details in the cloud bands. We then observed M42 the Orion Nebula with the UHC filter, which brought out the amazing three dimensional structure in the hydrogen gas. Some students even noticed the green colour in the nebula! We also saw the M45 (using the binoculars and the finderscope!), the passing of an low-altitude satellite (a surprising treat!) and the most famous red giant Betelgeuse (which unfortunately didn't blew up in front of us!).
